about

The song, Forever Part of Me, was written by Limerick man Tim Collins, who is a member of the Kilfenora Céilí Band and is a renowned national and international musician and composer.

Deirdre Scanlan, also from Limerick, poignantly performs the song. Tim generously offered to record and donate all of the proceeds from the song to CRY (Ireland), and gathered a team of Ireland’s leading traditional musicians, including members of the Kilfenora Céilí Band, who also volunteered, to record the song in October.

A patron of the charity, Tom Kavanagh sponsored the production and distribution.

lyrics

I have travelled to many a distant shore
And wondrous sights my eyes have seen
But there’s none can compare with the land of my birth
It is there that I long to be

I was raised within sight of the famed Barna Hill,
And I climbed Glenquin Castle as a boy
Held the hand of a man who fought the Black and Tans
And won freedom for you and I

Forever on my Mind
Flying Proudly upon a Shannon Breeze
The Green and White of Limerick
Forever a part of me

In the town of Newcastle I stole my first kiss
From a Colleen who’s lips were sweet as wine
As we walked hand in hand by the Deel’s lovely banks
She promised me she’d always be mine

On a bright Summer’s day we would all make our way
To Tuar and the river Allachán
And we’d sit side by side ‘neath the moon’s silvery light
Then home again by sweet Monagea

And we hunted the Wren with our neighbours and friends
The Beat of the Bodhrán filled the air
And we danced and we played ‘til the dawning of the day
How I long for those days once again

The Stories of old about Sarsfield so bold
His courage and guile against his foe
But the high price of Peace, with his fellow Wild Geese
From Shannon-side he had to go

I’m thinking tonight of our brave hurling men
Who brought honour upon the field of play
And I know in my heart that the wait is over now
The Treaty men will have their day.
